I think this quote also really captures what is happening when one is reported so much more than the other in American media:

“24,000 rapes in one year. That’s an epidemic. Brutal gang rape. Police doing nothing to protect or prosecute. Culture of rape. But something like that would never happen here in America, right? India is dirty and dangerous and overcrowded and backwards and misogynistic and this is just a third world problem, right? A really sad problem, but it would never happen here, right?”

It creates another false dichotomy where “we” feel bad for “them” that they have to live in those “conditions.” Definitely both situations are in need of address, but it’s worth examining why media leaps on framing India and its sexual assault issues as if they are a world different from ours- as if “our people” /culture really act better or respect women and victims more (they don’t.)

it’s way easier to dehumanize poc culture and portray it as being primitive and backwards than to analyze the structure of misogyny and rape culture in the so called “developed world”.

Because I realized that I knew exactly what she was talking about. And you do too. Because of their constant fear of rape (conscious or not), women do things throughout the day to protect themselves. Whether it’s carrying our keys in our hands as we walk home, locking our car doors as soon as we get in, or not walking down certain streets, we take precautions. While taking precautions is certainly not a bad idea, the fact that certain things women do are so ingrained into our daily routines is truly disturbing. In 2008, an 18-year-old woman in Washington State reported to police that she had been sexually assaulted. But they didn’t believe her. Lynnwood Police Chief Steve Jensen said that her story changed, her details were inconsistent and that people who knew the victim expressed doubts about her story.

So the police charged her with false reporting, and she pleaded guilty under a deal that included a fine of $500. The charge remains on her record.

Three years later, Marc O’Leary was arrested in Colorado for charges of sexual assault, kidnapping, burglary and felony menacing. He is being held on $5 million bail. When the police raided O’Leary’s home earlier this month, they found photos of his victims.

The 18-year-old woman from Washington was in those photographs.

Abolish Capitalism

How is that Capitalism’s fault? Thats society fault

The key word here is “law.” That’s government’s fault, not capitalism.

You do realize that about 99% of groceries have programs where they sell bags of food that they then donate to homeless shelters, correct? Due to government limits on what they can donate, not everything pictured in this shot can be donated. You also realize that a lot of grocery stores, due to government regulations, have to literally throw away old food instead of donating it as well. So instead of blaming capitalism, you should look at the government you seem to hold so near and dear.

Pretty much this exactly. Capitalism is not a bad thing. Neither is socialism. They’re just two different systems, and they both work, as long as people aren’t dicks. Don’t abolish capitalism. Abolish the stupid fucking rules that won’t let me donate cans of vegetables that have gone over their expiration but that are still perfectly fine to eat, as evidenced by me eating them and not getting sick.
